چکیده

Cultured neuronal networks generate spontaneous activity in the form of synchronized bursting events (SBEs)—short time events during which most of the recorded neurons fire rapidly. Each neuron in the SBE has its own temporal firing rate pattern. It has been shown that a large network can exhibit several SBE sub-groups, each with its own characteristic spatio-temporal pattern of activity. In this work we address the question: what distinguishes one sub-group of SBEs from another? We show that in each SBE type the neurons fire at different delays relative to one another and that in different SBEs the firing rate function of each neuron remains the same. Modeled neurons in simulated networks with non-homogeneous architecture could exhibit only one of these two characteristics, but not both. We propose that incorporating mechanisms of global network regulation, for instance in the form of glia, might lead to more realistic modeling consistent with our results. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. Cultured neuronal networks: Not so dull after all

http://nano.tau.ac.il Cultured cells are one of the most powerful tools for biological investigations (1). Various cell types such as endothelial cells (cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels) and heart muscle cells, can be cultured in vitro and can be maintain for prolonged periods (weeks and months). While lacking the complexity of in-vivo system, they nonetheless exhibit rich ...

Memory retention--the synaptic stability versus plasticity dilemma.

Memory maintenance is widely believed to involve long-term retention of the synaptic weights that are set within relevant neural circuits during learning. However, despite recent exciting technical advances, it has not yet proved possible to confirm experimentally this intuitively appealing hypothesis. Artificial neural networks offer an alternative methodology as they permit continuous monitor...

Coemergence of regularity and complexity during neural network development.

With the growing recognition that rhythmic and oscillatory patterns are widespread in the brain and play important roles in all aspects of the function of our nervous system, there has been a resurgence of interest in neuronal synchronized bursting activity. Here, we were interested in understanding the development of synchronized bursts as information-bearing neuronal activity patterns. For th...

Small-world structure induced by spike-timing-dependent plasticity in networks with critical dynamics

The small-world property in the context of complex networks implies structural benefits to the processes taking place within a network, such as optimal information transmission and robustness. In this paper, we study a model network of integrate-and-fire neurons that are subject to activitydependent synaptic plasticity. We find the learning rule that gives rise to a small-world structure when t...
